We are familiar with the essential oral health habits of brushing, flossing, or visiting your dentist for routine check-ups. You may also be following some oral tips beyond these oral habits for better oral health. But you may not know there are some oral habits that can be harming your oral health without your knowledge. Knowing the habits that are harming your health, you will avoid them and be able to save yourself the extra money that you would have to spend on dental treatment afterwards. This blog will tell you some habits that are bad for your oral hygiene.

1) Brushing Too Hard

You may be the person who brushes their teeth twice daily, but if you are brushing violently, then it will surely create an issue for you. It can hurt your gums and can lead to gum bleeding. Brushing too hard can erode the enamel from your teeth, and enamel is a vital part of your teeth that protects them. Brushing is a good habit, but make sure you go gentle next time rather than brushing violently.

2) Grinding Your Teeth

Many people have the habit of teeth grinding. Teeth grinding is also known as “bruxism.” Stress and anxiety are said to be the cause of grinding teeth often. Teeth grinding can happen at any time of the day; many people grind teeth while they are sleeping, and they don’t even know it. Teeth grinding can cause various oral health problems that include joint problems, eroding teeth enamel, teeth losing, or cracked teeth. You should visit your dentist regarding teeth grinding. The dentist will provide you with treatments and medicines.

3) Consuming Soda Beverages

Soda beverages have high acidic levels and high sugar levels, and both will be harmful to your teeth. Sugar levels in soda can lead to tooth decay. A high level of acids can erode teeth enamel and can also lead to teeth sensitivity. You will have to minimize your consumption of soda beverages. Instead, drink water to quench your thirst. After your teeth are exposed to acidic beverages, you can rinse your mouth with water to minimize the teeth enamel erosion. You can use a straw for drinking soda beverages; it will reduce your teeth’s exposure with an acid beverage.

4) Drinking Fruit Juice

You may be drinking fruit juice as an alternative for soda beverages. Your basic thinking will be that it is healthy because of it’s vitamin and mineral contents. Yes, it is healthy, but the sugar levels in the fruit juices take away this benefit. People ignore the amount of sugar a natural fruit juice contains. They also contain an equal level of sugar as much as in soda. To consume fruit juice with fewer sugar levels, you can add some water to it. Or much better option would be eating the fruits.

5) Snacking Throughout the Day

Constantly snacking throughout the day can affect your oral healthy badly. Constantly snacking makes food debris sit on your teeth for prolonged times. This could also lead to the spreading of plaque on your teeth. Your snacking habit can lead you to eat foods that are harmful to your oral health. You can also consume drinks with high sugar and acid levels, which can again lead to harm to your teeth. So you can control your snacking habits, or you can opt for cleansing-type food that helps to minimize the plaque. Among them, some good choices to opt for would be an apple, carrots, or celery.

6) Chewing and Biting Hard Objects

People tend to chew or bite on objects unconsciously when they are concentrating. They tend to chew pencils or bite their nails at times. Doing so puts pressure on your teeth and can lead your teeth to various harms like teeth misaligning, chip, or fracture your teeth over time. Biting and chewing habits can also lead to developing teeth-grinding habits. It can also lead your teeth to slowly worn down, and chances of plaque and bacterial building increase. You can use a substitute such as chewing sugarless gum to prevent tooth damage.

7) Opening Packages with Your Teeth

Opening packages with your teeth can result in harming your teeth. As your teeth are meant for smiling and chewing food, not to be used as an alternative for knives or scissors. You may seem it is convenient to use your teeth for tearing packages like potato chips package, clamping onto pins, or opening bottle caps. But doing so can cause a chip or fracture to your teeth. So, whenever opening any package, use your hands, knives, or scissors instead.

8) Binge Eating

Binge eating involves consuming a large number of sugary eatables or drinks. Consuming such amounts of sugary food can lead to tooth decay and other dental problems. Binge eating also leads to the cause of another eating disorder called bulimia, in which the food is purged by vomiting. Vomit contains high acids that can lead to damage teeth over time. People suffering from binge eating disorder hide the problem from friends and family. But this won’t help them, as soon as possible they should contact a psychiatrist or psychologist for the treatment. They would suggest some therapy for the patient to change their thoughts and control their eating habits. 

9) Piercing Tongue or Lip

Piercing your tongue or lip may not seem harmful rather fashionable and cool. But dentists discourage the piercing of tongue and lip. It always has the risking of accidentally biting down on piercing that can cause chipping or fracturing your tooth. The metal can also run against your gums that can lead to damage to your oral health by infections. 

Oral hygiene habits can be improved over time. You can’t just sit back and live all along with such habits because they will cause you severe oral health problems in the long run. So you should better develop healthy oral habits.
